In the bench going through the hardboard and mdf and then replace the top, i think registering the holes in the new hardboard layer may be quite difficult. to do it again, i would probably give up on the idea of a replaceable top.. Crafting any type of woodworking project in a shop without a good, solid workbench is a lot like trying to create a memorable meal in a kitchen with no countertop space.. According to the "getting started in woodworking" video, you can build this bench with only a few basic tools - a drill, a circular saw, and a hand-held router. this isn't quite true. hardboard is tougher than mdf, so this should last longer. and when it crushes, it'll be easy enough to replace..
